FA Certificates

In the UK the FA coaching certificate system is now split into 2 streams, main stream coaching courses and age appropriate coaching courses. For more information click here.

Remember if you like what you see please DONATE all proceeds used to keep these resources available for everyone!

This section provides the coaching background behind to the main stream coaching courses. The age appropriate coaching is covered under the FA Youth Award menu. Through any coaching, coaches should consider the following aspects:

Physical : How demanding is the session that you are delivering - does it take into account the teams recent work load, have they got many games or is it preseason where fitness is the focus.

Psychological: Do the players feel confident when they are playing? Do we need to focus on the psychological element of the game.

Social: Football should be fun at any age, if a player is not enjoying the game it will affect the other aspects of coaching.

Technical: Skills and techniques that the players can, want and will be able to do over a training period.

Key points when coaching

  • Is the session organized and supervised in a safe environment
  • Can you introduce progressions at the right time to challenge players
  • Understand the different aspects when coaching different players
  • Adapt and vary coaching sessions to take into account players ability and age
  • Identify areas where you as a coach can improve

After every session a coach should spend sometime reflecting what went well, what went bad and what could have been improved during a coaching session. To help with this a evaluation template is here, this template can be used at all levels of the coaching ladder.

The sessions are laid out in the following format:
